If a Vault user passes away, Swan can assist heirs in transferring Bitcoin by signing transactions with the cloud key. Two things are required to reliably pass Bitcoin to inheritors: legal title and key transfer.
Legal title: Swan requires official legal documentation before assisting with the Bitcoin transfer, effectively allowing Swan to legally assist your executor in the proper disposition and transfer of your assets. The executor of your estate will need to present relevant documentation from a probate office or court as evidence of appointment. Depending on the state or specific circumstances involved, documents requested may include, but not be limited to, the following: Short Certificate, Certificate of Appointment, Letters Testamentary, birth or marriage certificate, death certificate, proof of legal name change or trustee documents.
Key transfer: As the Vault uses a 2-of-3 multisig scheme, your heir(s) will also require at least one of your locally held keys to withdraw Bitcoin. You must plan to transfer your keys to inheritors.
In summary, Swan can provide cloud key signatures to assist transfers once legal authority is demonstrated by your appointed executor or trustee. Your heir(s) must also gain access to at least one of your two keys to move the Bitcoin. With planning, your Bitcoin can reliably pass to your heir(s).
